A 15-kg panchaloha idol, believed to be more than 50 years old, was stolen from the Sreekovil of Makkaalikkavu Bhagavathy Temple at Kunnamkulam in Thrissur district. The theft took place on Thursday night and came to light when the temple priests arrived to open the temple on Friday morning.

The thief reportedly took the key to the Sreekovil from the temple office, opened the sanctum and removed the idol. The CCTV camera was covered with a silk cloth while the theft was carried out. The Kunnamkulam police reached the temple and launched an investigation. A detailed inspection of the premises is also under way.

The incident comes shortly after a theft at the Vazhapilly family temple near Makkaalikkavu Temple. A four-gram gold thali was stolen from the shrine, while the temple bhandarams were broken open and cash was taken. Police are examining whether the two incidents are connected.
