Normal operations in public sector banks in Tiruchi district were completely hit on Friday as employees and officers owing allegiance to various bank unions resorted to a one-day strike demanding the implementation of a five-day working week, settlement of residual issues and resolution of pending demands.

The nationwide strike was called by the United Forum of Bank Unions, the umbrella body of seven bank unions — All India Bank Employees’ Association (AIBEA), All India Bank Officers Confederation (AIBOC), National Confederation of Bank Employees (NCBE), All India Bank Officers Association (AIBOA), Bank Employees Federation of India (BEFI), Indian National Bank Officers Congress and Indian National Bank Employees Federation.

Bank employees owing allegiance to AIBEA, AIBOC, NCBE, AIBOA and BEFI assembled in good numbers and staged a demonstration in support of their demands in front of the State Bank of India main branch in Tiruchi.

The strike by employees and officers was total in the district, due to which banking transactions were completely hit, union sources said.
