The West Bengal government has planned to host a major Durga Puja event at the Eden Gardens cricket stadium with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in audience. Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari said this would mark the beginning of the biggest festival in the State, the Mahalaya (arrival of Durga) on October 10.

“We will have the biggest Durga Puja event on Mahalaya in Eden Gardens. This will be the beginning of the pujas,” CM Adhikari said at a Durga Puja preparatory meeting in Kolkata.

Drone shows and fireworks will also be organised at the event and will be organised by the Information & Cultural Affairs Department of the State.

“Eden Gardens is required to be booked and made available for organising a series of cultural and celebratory programmes in connection with proposed Durga Puja Celebrations, 2026, including a grand cultural programme for the period from 25th September to 15th October, 2026, including necessary preparatory and dismantling arrangements,” a letter to initiate sent to the Cricket Association of Bengal said.

“This is the first time such an event will take place here. This is the first time the PM will come to Eden Gardens for a cultural event,” CAB president and veteran cricketer Sourav Ganguly told a local media house.

PM’s birthday celebrations

On Thursday (September 10), 2026), Mr. Adhikari also said that diyas will be lit across Kolkata and major buildings will be covered in lights as part of PM Modi’s birthday celebrations on September 17.

“These events will be held across the State. At least 1 crore families will participate in the celebrations... Around 80,000 schools have also been roped into these celebrations,” Mr. Adhikari said. The main event will held on the ghats of Ganga where they will light up several candles to mark the occasion.

The students will do various cultural and educational activities based on their ideas and dreams of the future of India based on the Vikshit Bharat mission of 2047. The CM also added that the PM will virtually address the people on September 17.

Multiple cleanliness drives and blood donation camps will also be organised across the State on that day.
