Family of 9/11 hero to retrace his steps in final Tunnel to Towers stop

The family of 9/11 hero Stephen Siller will mark the 25th anniversary of the attacks by retracing the FDNY firefighter's steps as he ran through the Brooklyn-Battery Tunnel toward the World Trade Center.

Frank Siller and other members of the Siller family will participate in the private walk before joining hundreds of friends and supporters at the FDNY Ten House.

The event will conclude the Tunnel to Towers "Steel Across America" tour, which has traveled since May bringing Siller's story and a 21-foot steel beam from the South Tower all across the nation.

On the morning of 9/11 Siller had just concluded his shift with the fire department when he received word that a plane had struck the World Trade Center.

"Stephen drove his truck to the entrance of the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel, but it had already been closed for security purposes. Determined to carry out his duty, he strapped 60 lbs. of gear to his back, and raced on foot through the tunnel to the Twin Towers, where he gave up his life while saving others," the tour's website recounts.

Since its founding, inspired by Siller and his favorite quote, "While we have time, let us do good," Tunnel to Towers has provided more than 1,700 to the families of fallen service members and first responders, as well as to disabled veterans and first responders. The organization has also delivered housing assistance and support services to more than 20,000 homeless veterans and holds hundreds of events nationwide to honor America’s heroes and preserve the memory of those who lost their lives for future generations.

The has helped to educate students from kindergarten through 12th grade on the "extraordinary heroism and goodness of everyday people" on Sept. 11, "while demonstrating the strength and resilience of America’s spirit. " Its has traveled to nearly all 50 states as well as Canada.

To mark , Tunnel to Towers also launched its this year to honor the who died on Sept. 11. According to the group, this initiative will deliver 343 mortgage-free homes to the families of fallen service members and fallen first responders as well as to catastrophically injured service members across the country.
