Karuppasamy, an entrepreneur from Kongankulam village under the Alangulam panchayat, ran a poultry farm housing more than 2,000 birds.
Due to frequent, unannounced power outages in the area over the past few days, the electric fans and water-sprinkling motors crucial for regulating the farm’s indoor temperature could not be operated, he alleged.
Unable to bear the severe heat inside the shed, more than 1,000 chickens perished, causing a financial loss estimated between ₹80,000 and ₹1,00,000.
Mr. Karuppasamy alleged the unannounced power cuts led to the mass mortality. He also alleged that local electricity board officials responded with apathy and failed to provide a proper explanation when he contacted them regarding the outages.
He has urgently appealed to the State government to provide financial compensation for his loss.
