The pond, belonging to the Agatheeswarar temple, was once used for celebrating temple festivals. However, over the years, the pond has been encroached, with the latest being a party office of the TVK being planned to be opened.
The residents of the locality had been requesting the Kundrathur Taluk to renovate the pond, which was in a dilapidated condition for several years with garbage being dumped and sewage let in. Added to this, slowly thatched huts came up and were replaced by concrete houses.
Social activist R.K. Ravichandran said the residents through the Federation of Consumer Organisations Tamilnadu and Pondicherry had been repeatedly giving petitions to the revenue officials for taking steps to remove encroachments and clean the pond.
Though the Kancheepuram district officials, in a circular issued on August 24, 2025, stated that a private car company has come forward to renovate the pond located at Jothi Nagar through the Corporate Social Responsibility fund of ₹97 lakh.
The residents during the Jamabandhi sessions had given petitions to remove the encroachment highlighting that the renovation work should not be rushed with. But recently the renovation work has been initiated without removing the encroachments, residents charged.
