Corporation Commissioner S. Priyanka presided over the event. Mr. Jegan distributed loan sanction orders and identity cards to 100 street vendors.
Speaking at the event, the Mayor said applications had been received from 9,224 eligible street vendors across all 60 wards of the corporation. Of these, loans had been sanctioned to 7,846 vendors, while 7,593 vendors had received the loans so far.
He added under the scheme street vendors are provided loans of ₹15,000 in the first tranche, ₹25,000 in second tranche and ₹50,000 in third tranche through banks. Identity cards are also being issued to the street vendors by the corporation and so far 1,864 vendors had received while 500 more identity cards have been issued recently.
The Mayor noted the financial assistance had helped improve the business and livelihood of street vendors and had been particularly useful in helping them avoid high-interest loans from private lenders.
He urged the vendors to repay the loans regularly, and advised them to conduct their businesses only in spaces allotted to them and not cause inconvenience to the public.
He further urged them to stop the usage of polythene bags, highlighting the impacts of those bags and cooperate with the civic body in keeping the eco-system clean and green..
